Onyinyechi Mark, 23, out-lifted opponents in the La Chapelle Arena, such as China’s Cui Jianjin, who won silver after lifting 140 kg, and Mexico’s Amelia Perez, who lifted 130 kg to win bronze at the global event in Paris, France. The win is Nigeria’s first gold in the 2024 Paralympic Games and the country’s third medal in the event after Eniola Bolaji won bronze, Nigeria’s first medal in the 2024 Games, in the women’s singles SL3 badminton event, and Esther Nworgu won Nigeria a silver medal in the women’s 41 kg para-powerlifting event.

Nigerians are also hopeful that legendary 46-year-old para-powerlifting athlete Lucy Ejike will win a medal in the 67 kg category of the event. She has won three Paralympic gold medals for Team Nigeria and will be hoping to win more in the Paris 2024 Games.
