Team Nigeria is yet to have a competitor in the final round of any competition so far and our awful showing continued yesterday as the D’ Tigers lost to Lithuania 72-53.
The D’ Tigers were completely outshined by their opponents. The Lithuanians dominated from the start and almost ran away with the match in the second quarter but the Nigerians rallied and Tony Skinn’s free throws helped peg the score 34-27 at the break.
However, the second half was a one-sided affair as the Lithuanians cruised to victory. Ike Diogu and Al-Farouq Aminu had 12 points each for Nigeria while grabbing 10 and 11 rebounds respectively, with Alade Aminu adding 10 points but it wasn’t enough to steer the team to victory.
South Africa became the first African country to win a gold medal at the Games on Day Two when Cameron van der Burgh won the Men’s 100m Breast stroke in world record time 58.46. Chad le Clos added another gold medal to their kitty yesterday when he won the Men’s 200m Butterfly final against the Legend, Michael Phelps of US who won a record 19th Olympic medal yesterday, with the slightest of margin.
