2020 Tokyo Olympic Games Update: Okagbare Suspended

  Nigerians that stayed awake to watch sprinter, Oluwatobilola Amusan, in the early hours of Saturday, July 31, 2021, were not disappointed as she won the heat 3 of the women’s 100m Hurdles in a time of 12.72s, beating Jamaica’s Yanique Thompson who placed second (12.74s). With this result, Amusan qualified for the semis and will be looking to book her place in the final.

The duo of Ese Brume and Tobi Amusan, have been drafted into the 4x100m Nigerian women’s relay team. Nigeria risked not fielding any team for the event, but luckily, both athletes will finish their events on time to help Nigeria’s quest for a 4x100m medal in Tokyo. Nigerian national men’s basketball team crashed out of the Tokyo Olympics in just the group stage after suffering a 71-80 points defeat at the hands of the Italian national team. The coach Mike Brown tutored side went into the encounter hoping to win the Europeans and qualify as one of the best third-placed teams in the group stage, but they now have to depart the Olympic village in Tokyo ahead of the quarter-finals.

After being hit by the disqualification of some athletes earlier this week from participating in the Olympics, Team Nigeria has been rocked with another disaster as the country’s sprint queen, Blessing Okagbare, was provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit. The athletic body revealed that one of Okagbare’s Out of Competition samples returned positive. Owing to this development, the sprinter will now miss the semi-final of the women’s 100m event.
