Throwback Thursday: Old Nigerian Wedding Songs We Still Love

old nigerian wedding songs
Nigerian music has come a really long way no doubt and in the course of evolution we’ve seen some hit songs – some not so much – which will always be remembered. There are certain songs that leave a lasting impression because of the message the song presents. We feel these songs especially because the lyrics have a way of saying what we have in our minds, and it’s especially true with wedding songs. Nigerian wedding songs of 10years ago were epic go-to songs for every wedding. They get you so emotional and teary, and for the Singles, has you doing a mental calculation of when your wedding could, would happen. So if you want to party just like it’s 1999 on your wedding day, you have to include these classics to your playlist.

Here are the old Nigerian wedding songs we still love:

Sunny Nneji – Oruka
Oruka is probably the most popular and finest Nigerian wedding song yet, released in 2003 by Sunny Nneji. It was a staple for wedding parties; this song paved way for other romantic wedding songs IMO, you will hardly attend any wedding then without it being played. If your DJ didn’t play Oruka at your wedding you missed out marrying the proper Naija way – find that DJ again and fire him.
Nel Oliver – Baby girl
It just wouldn’t be a complete classic throwback list without Nel Oliver’s Baby girl song. Ok so the Man responsible for this dreamy song is from the Benin Republic, nevertheless, it got lots of attention here in Nigeria and helped shape lots of Nigerian wedding parties, so it’s been adopted as a Nigerian song. Not forgetting the song was done with a bit of Yoruba language, French, English, and Gun (A native Benenoise language). It’s also an excellent father-daughter song that gets you tearing up.
Paul play – Angel of my life
OMG Angel of my life topped charts and was highly appreciated back then. Paul play poured out all his emotions and feelings in this track, it was rocked especially at the entrance of wedding receptions. Angel of my life is an ultimate classic.
Tosin Martins – Olo mi
Tosin Martins’ OloMi can’t be relegated to the background either. As at the time the song came out everyone loved it, and was – is still – perfect for weddings. It’s a great song you wouldn’t want to miss out playing for that special one on your wedding day.
Psquare – No one like you
Psquare has given us countless love songs that have captured our hearts. But this particular song ‘No one like you’ is unlike the rest. Ok, maybe it’s because of the wedding theme in the song – we don’t really want to know the reason – all we care about is that the song has been engraved in our hearts.
Tuface Idibia – African queen
Tuface’s African Queen doesn’t need plenty introduction. If you don’t know it, scratch that you should know it, it was like the best biggest thing that happened to Nigerian Romantic music scene at the time. As at when the song hit the airwaves, it swept us off our feet and almost replaced Nigerian national anthem – yes, it was that popular.
Bonus: Flavour – Ada Ada
I’m just going to be biased with this one just because… well, we all know it’s not that old but either way, let’s face it Ada Ada is already a classic. The video is a clear illustration of what a typical Igbo traditional wedding looks like. Regardless of the Igbo vibe, it was a toast at every wedding that everyone danced to.  Flavour sure outdid himself with this one as it would be remembered for a long time. Which song did you love the most and which do you feel should be on the list? let us know in the comment section.
