Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, enters the list of Forbes Most Powerful Women in the World at number 81. She is in a list that includes heads of states, CEOs, media personalities and entertainers. She is second amongst the three Africans listed; Joyce Banda, President of Malawi came before her at 71, while, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, President of Liberia came third at 82.
Forbes statement for Okonjo Iweala: ”When Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala left the World Bank in 2011, where she was a managing director and the second-in-command, to become the finance minister of Nigeria, eyebrows were raised. So it was no surprise that she was on the short-list of candidates when the organization conducted an international search for a new leader this April. The top spot went to President Obama’s pick Jim Yong Kim, but many say Okonjo-Iweala was by far the most qualified candidate. “
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala first made the list in 2011, coming at No. 87. She stated that being listed is a victory for Nigeria and Africa.
