As an appendage in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, the “place of origin” commonly referred to as the State of Origin certificate is also the Local Government Identification. It has generated concerns among well-meaning Nigeria to be replaced with a more proper status of the “State of Residence” for Nigerian citizens, as obtainable in advanced heterogeneous countries. However, what is this certificate or identification letter issues? Who needs it? And how to obtain it is the focus here.
What is the State of Origin Certificate
This is a document that is given to individuals to certify their local government and state of of origin. It is mostly given based on the state the father of the individual originates from. So, to receive the document, you will need the local government your parent or parents are from to prove your origin from that given area.
Who needs the State of Origin Certificate
First, Nigerians obviously are legally qualified to obtain a state of origin certificate. In addition, there are many reasons why people require a state of origin certificate. These reasons are usually influenced by the need of the moment, especially as a requirement for institutions and government agencies. Therefore, students often need the certificates for admission clearance into higher institution especially in public schools or when a person is searching for a job, among others.
How to Obtain the State of Origin Certificate in Nigeria
If you lack useful information, obtaining such a paper can be quite difficult. This certificate can be obtained from:
1. Your Local Government Area office
This is the most common and popular place to obtain your Local Government certificate. This requires the individual to visit his/her local government headquarters and identify with the authorities who will issue the certificate at a cost.
2. Your State Liaison Office
If you reside in Lagos and Abuja, you can obtain your State of Origin certificate irrespective of you home state without having to travel back. Why? Because all the states have a Liaison office in Lagos. Once you visit their facility, they should be able to issue you a certificate once you have met all their requirements.
Requirements include:
- Recent Passport photographs (two copies)
- Special Form: You could be given a special form to fill out. Therein, you provide your personal details. However, in some cases, verbal exchanges occur.
- Payment: You will receive bank account details from the officials to pay for the certificate or be expected to pay cash. If you pay in the bank, ensure you duplicate it and submit the photocopy and wait your certificate is printed, signed and issued.
