Oando Plc, one of Nigeria’s indigenous successful oil and gas company, has taken education to heart, by adopting public primary schools and supporting selected pupils there to further their education. It will take ten outstanding student from those schools and pay for their tuition fees and sundry expenses. Oando has committed 1% of its profit before tax to its foundation, and has a vision to adopt more schools in the country.
Speaking in Civic Center Lagos, where the scholarship move was launched, the Director of Oando Foundation, Tokunboh Durosaro, said that, “Ten outstanding primary school six pupil from each of the foundation’s adopted schools, will be sponsored through secondary and tertiary institution on an annual basis.” She continued, “A lot of children who are enrolled in Nigerian public primary schools never progress to higher levels of education. Secondary and tertiary education remain mere pipe dreams for most of them. We are committed to changing this grim story for as many Nigerian children as we possibly can.”
