November 21 Is World Television Day

Television has been recognised as being at the forefront of democracy, culture and information sharing. Television continually gives us something to explore, discover and dream about no matter the device it is consumed on. In this light, the UN has declared today World Television Day. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 November as World Television Day (through resolution 51/205 of 17 December 1996). Celebration of this day is not really that of the tool, but rather of the philosophy that it stands for. Television is a symbol of communication and globalization in our modern world. The society depends on information technology and communication to carry out most activities, including work, entertainment, education, health care, tourism, business and many others endeavours. All the things we experience through television moulds and affects our lives. This is a major reason for some emergence of new value systems among youths, which usually is a result of the images they come across on television. Television also has great impact on decision making, bringing to the attention of the world areas of conflict and threats to peace and security, as well as helping to sharpen focus on major issues in the world including social and economic issues.
