The Los Angeles Sparks forward got a total of 19 votes from a national panel comprising of 49 sportswriters and broadcasters to beat another Nigerian, Elizabeth Williams, of the Atlanta Dream to second place with 8 votes. Ariel Atkins (Washington Mystics guard) and Brianna Turner (Phoenix Mercury forward) both finished in third place with four votes each. An annual award given to a player that exhibits exemplary sportsmanship ideals, ethical behaviour, fair play and integrity on the court, the Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award was named after late WNBA star, Kim Perrot, who was pivotal in Houston Comets first two WNBA titles win before a seven-month battle with cancer saw her pass on in August 1999.

Over time, Nneka has proven to be an invaluable leader in the WNBA. As president of the WNBA Players Association, she has led a groundbreaking Collective Bargaining Agreement and spearheaded most of the campaigns for social justice in the league.
