Nigerians In Sports: Mikel Obi Joins Stoke City

  Former Super Eagles of Nigeria captain, John Obi Mikel, has sealed a deal with English Championship side, Stoke City FC.  The 33-year-old Nigerian midfielder became the fourth summer signing for the potters in their bid to stage a return to the English Premier League. Mikel returns to England for his third spell after a brief stint with Turkish Super Lig side, Trabzonspor. Stoke City manager, Micheal O’Neill has expressed delight at the signing of the highly decorated Nigerian.

We spent four hours talking and he made it clear he wants to get back into the Premier League and finish his career there, and hopefully, he can do that with Stoke City.” Michael O’Neill
It will be recalled that Mikel featured more than 370 times for English Premier League giants, Chelsea FC, after joining them from Lyn Oslo of Norway in 2006. The former Super Eagles of Nigeria captain made 91 appearances for Nigeria’s national team which saw him win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Aside from winning two English Premier League titles, Mikel boasts a trophy cabinet which comprises three FA Cup titles, English League Cup, Champions League, and the Europa League title. The Nigerian football legend would return to England from China in January 2019, making a total of 19 appearances for Middlesbrough FC before leaving again for Turkey to join Trabzonspor. This new adventure will see Mikel partner with other stars like Steven Fletcher, Morgan Fox, and James Chester, in their bid to win the 2020/2021 Sky Bet Championship title with Stoke City.
