Nigerians In Sports: Chukwueze Becomes Youngest Player To Feature 100 Times For Villarreal

  Super Eagles of Nigeria forward, Samuel Chukwueze hit a significant milestone for his Spanish club Villarreal on the night of Tuesday, January 5, 2020, after becoming the youngest player in the club’s history to feature in 100 games. Chukwueze, 21, set the record during Villarreal’s 4-1 win over Spanish third division side, Zamora, on Tuesday in the Copa del Rey.

At just the age of 21, 7 months, and 11 days, the Nigerian has featured in 79 Spanish La Liga games, 13 Europa League matches, and eight times in the Copa del Rey. Before Chukwueze, Argentine defender, Mateo Musacchio, who now plays for Italian league giants, AC Milan,  held the record of being the youngest player to hit 100 games for the Yellow Submarines at the age of 21, 11 months, and 20 days. Chukwueze now joins the likes of Gerard Moreno, Carlos Bacca, Sergio Asenjo, Manu Trigueros, Mario Gaspar, Jaume Costa, and Moi Gómez in the present Villarreal squad to have featured for more than 100 times for the Spanish outfits.

In his 100 games for the club, statistics show that Chukwueze has had a hand in 28 goals with 14 goals and 14 assists. These numbers have equally seen him emerge as one of the most sought-after football talents in the world. The likes of Spanish heavyweights, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and English giants, Chelsea FC, at different times were reported to have indicated an interest in the 2015 FIFA Under 17 World Cup winner.
