Nigerian Scientists at the Centre for Basic Space Science (CBSS), Nsukka, Enugu State, are building an extensive network of radio telescopes, called interferometer. An interferometer is an array of telescopes or mirror segments acting together that is used in astronomy. This advances Nigeria’s research and space quest, with innovation that is powered locally.
In an interview, the new director of the agency, Professor F.E. Opara, said, “It is important, for both scientific and strategic reasons, to quickly break into the ranks of nations conducting serious research. In fact, we want Nigeria and, indeed, West Africa to be a centre of excellence”.
He said the telescopes create, “a profile of the object, at radio wavelength, which yields various types of data, such as its velocity, chemistry, temperature, orientation and physical properties”.
