Nigerian Novelist and Poet, Professor Chinua Achebe is dead. He died last night in the United States, at a hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He was a Professor of African Studies at Brown University, and was 82.
He has reportedly been ill for some weeks now, with talk of deterioration of his health. His last book, “There Was A Country“, his personal history of Biafra, generated much controversy in Nigeria last year. In 2012, he was listed for National Honour, and he rejected it.
Professor Achebe soared to limelight with his first Novel, “Things Fall Apart”, which became the most read African novel.
Professor Achebe will be remembered for his messages to African leaders and his contribution to African literature. He was married to Christie Achebe, they have three children and six grandchildren.
