Nigerian, Kelechi Ndukwe To Command US Navy Guided Missile Destroyer

  On Friday, April 2, 2021, United States-based Nigerian-American Navy Officer, Kelechi Ndukwe, will make history as the first Nigerian to command a United States Navy Guided Missile Destroyer, USS HALSEY (DDG-97). The Nigerian has joined the long list of the Africans in diaspora hitting remarkable heights.

His new position comes at a time when Nigerians are pushing limitlessly to show the world that there is more to the country of over 180 million inhabitants than corruption and other criminal related offences. Kelechi Ndukwe bagged his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame before going ahead to earn a Master’s degree in National Security and Strategy from the United States Naval War College. The Nigerian who is serving in the US Navy as a Joint Staff in the Force Structure, Resource, and Assessment Directorate, also commands a huge experience as a Surface Welfare Officer.

Aside from serving on multiple warships, Kelechi Ndukwe has also been extensively deployed to the Mediterranean Sea, Horn of Africa, Arabian Gulf, and the Western Pacific Ocean. Recently, he served as the Commanding Officer of USS DEVASTATOR (MCM 6), a Bahrain-based minesweeper. Ndukwe also boasts a huge influence on ashore. He once served in the Navy Office of Legislative Affairs where, as a Congressional Liaison, he represented the Navy on Capitol Hill. Before commencing work as a Joint Staff, he served in the US Navy as the Director for Surface Warfare. Kelechi Ndukwe’s exploits have equally earned him some recognition such as the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
