If you’re yet to see Black Panther, Marvel’s superhero blockbuster movie that’s said to be breaking box office records, then, without mincing words, you’re missing a great deal! The movie, which made its debut across cinemas worldwide on February 16th 2018, has since been getting positive reviews especially, because of its African theme, celebrating black excellence. Black Panther tells the story of T’Challa (played by Chadwick Boseman) who, after the events of Captain America: Civil War (another Marvel blockbuster), returns to his hometown of Wakanda – an isolated but technologically advanced society – to take his place as king. Unfortunately, T’Challa is drawn into conflict by rival fractions. The movie has garnered a lot of optimism from actors and fans alive, as well as from comic enthusiasts in Nigeria.

Nigerian references

A screening of Black Panther in Lagos recently saw much of the audience dressed in traditional attires, celebrating the African garments worn in the movie. The movie is hailed for depicting Africa in a positive light, from the fashion to the arts. References in the movie were also made to Nigeria; T’Challa’s ex-girlfriend, Nakia (played by Lupita Nyong’o),  is rescued from Sambisa Forest where she was captured alongside other Chibok girls; the Benin artifacts, which include bronze heads of the Benin Kingdom mentioned; T’Challa in brocade; the Ankara dresses Nakia stunned in. Let’s not forget the Nigeria-born actress Sope Aluko, who played Shaman, a powerful primal leader. There are lots of exciting portrayals of Nigeria and Africa in the movie, where black people are in charge of their own destiny. Watch the trailer below: Feature image photo credit: www.nme.com
