The Nigerian senior men’s football team, the Super Eagles qualified for the final rounds of the World Cup in Russia next year after they defeated Zambia 1:0 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo. The team would need a lot of preparations which will include playing with other international teams and bumping their training sequence in other to do remarkably when the tournaments begin in June next year.
England like Nigeria have booked their spot for Russia next year and are also in need of training for the World’s. According to report on Nigerian online portal FCNaija, the English Football Association reportedly contacted Nigeria shortly after the Super Eagles qualified for the World Cup after their Zambia win, for a friendly game to help both teams prepare for Russia next year.
”We have received a mail from the FA asking for the friendly with the Eagles but it will only be confirmed after the draws, if we are in the same group we cannot play against each other”, an unnamed source at the NFF was quoted as saying by FCNAIJA.
Nigeria has only faced England twice, in 1995, where England emerged 1-0 winners at the old Wembley stadium in a friendly game, and at the World Cup in Japan/South Korea which ended in a 0-0 deadlock.
The friendly between the three lions and the Super Eagles has been scheduled for next year but the match-up will only hold if both teams are not in the same group when the draws for the World Cup is made in December.
