Nigeria Qualifies for CHAN

Nigeria were held to a goalless draw by Burkina Faso at Stade du 4 Août in Ouagadougou yesterday but it was enough for them to qualify for the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN) to be held in Rwanda. The home-based Eagles went into the game with a 2-goal advantage having won the first leg 2-0 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt. The Burkinabes dominated the game right from the kick-off but couldn’t upturn the defeat in the Garden City. They were given a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 21st minute when Austin Oboroakpo handled the ball inside his own 18-yard box but they failed to convert the resultant spot-kick. Nigeria joins Angola, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ethiopia, Gabon, DR Congo, Mali, Guinea, Tunisia, Morocco and the host, Rwanda as countries that will feature at the 2016 CHAN tournament. Nigeria will know their opponents for next year’s tournament on November 18 when the draw will be held in Kigali. The tournament is billed to start on January 16 and end on February 7.
