The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been drawn in Group C of the second round of Africa’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Results from the draw held at Nile Ritz-Carlton, Egypt, on the eve of Tuesday, January 21, 2020, revealed that Nigeria will confront Cape Verde, Central African Republic, and Liberia when the qualifiers kick off.

Football fans in the West African nation will be hoping that the Eagles make it through and emerge top of Group C to stand a chance of featuring in the global showpiece for the seventh time. Since Nigeria’s debut at the tournament (USA 1994 World Cup), the African football giant has only missed out on the quadrennial tournament on one occasion (Germany 2006 World Cup).

Three-time African champions, Nigeria, were eliminated in the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia after securing three points from three games against Croatia, Iceland, and Argentina. Nigeria’s best outings in the World Cup were in the 1994, 1998, and 2014 editions when the Super Eagles advanced from the group stage into the second round. Meanwhile, the trio of Cape Verde, Central African Republic and Liberia have never featured in the World Cup.
