The Super Eagles on Tuesday defeated Argentina 4:2 in a friendly match-up at the Krasnodar Arena Stadium in Russia. The Messi-less Argentina took the first swing at Nigeria in the 28th minute as Ever Banega scored the first goal of the game. A few minutes later, Sergio Aguero put in another goal for Argentina to put them 2 goals ahead of the Super Eagles.
The Eagles found it very difficult to hold off the Argies especially after a 2 goal lead in 36 minutes. Just before halftime, Iwobi was fouled and the referee awarded a free kick to the Super Eagles which the Leicester city forward Iheanacho converted excellently with a curved ball into the top corner of the Argentine net.
Despite Nigeria’s poor goal possession and horrid mistakes by Eagles’; goalie Akpeyi, Iwobi manages to put the light back into the eyes of Nigerian fans as he leveled up the scores in the 52nd minute.
In the 54th minute, substitute Brian Idowu put Nigeria in the lead with a goal assist from Iheanacho who kept pressing forward against the Argentines for a goal until his substitution.
Iwobi scored his second goal for Nigeria in the 73rd minute with an assist from substitute A. Musa to put Nigeria 2 goals ahead of Argentina at the end of the game.
It is the first time Nigeria has tried the 3-5-2-1 formation system and it has proven to be very effective. Despite conceding 2 goals in the first half, the Super Eagles had a brilliant comeback and are the only team to have scored 4 goals against the Argentines in their last two meetings in 2011 & 2017.
