Nigerian basketball fans were sent into jubilation on Sunday, August 18, 2019 after the women national basketball team defeated Senegal in the final of the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket competition to retain their place as champions after wining the tournament in 2017.
D’Tigress emerged victorious in a tightly contested final match which saw 15 thousand fans cheer both teams at the Dakar Arena. The Nigerian side recorded a 60-55 win despite the huge support the Senegalese team enjoyed from home fans.
Nigeria has become the first country after Angola to win back-to-back FIBA Women’s AfroBasket titles after the East African nation backed their 2011 triumph with another victory in 2013.
On the road to the final, Nigeria beat Mali 79-58 in the first semifinal match on Friday, August 16, 2019. It will be recalled that Senegal lost twice to Nigeria during the 2017 edition of the tournament in Mali. Both sides are the most dominant in African women basketball, which was evident during the 12-team tourney.
All attention is now focused on the Nigeria men basketball national team, D ’ Tigers, as they prepare for their participation at the FIBA World Cup slated to hold in China from Saturday August 31, 2019-Sunday September 15, 2019.
