he Japan Times

The hashtag #BeLikeNgoziChallenge has been trending for most of Monday into Tuesday and by the time you read this, it should still be high in the trend table. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has blazed a trail once again as she ascended the role of Director-General at the World Trade Organisation. https://twitter.com/honilatte/status/1361341964629798913?s=20 She did against what seemed like daunting opposition from even her own home government for a time.

Okonjo-Iweala’s career has seen her manoeuvre the murky waters of policy and administration both at the national and international level. She rose through the ranks at the World Bank to become Managing Director (Operations) at the World Bank. Her stint was interrupted by her first stint in government as finance minister and later foreign affairs minister- which she held for two months- in Obasanjo’s administration. She returned as a minister under Jonathan’s administration with an expanded portfolio as finance minister and defacto minister coordinating the economy. In addition, she is chairperson and director of a number of highly regarded institutions and companies. Her newest achievement is no doubt a fitting crown to her continued stellar performance in her field of work. It became clear she will be Roberto Azevedo’s successor when Korean trade minister Yoo Myung-hee withdrew from a hotly contested race in early February.

The #BeLikeNgoziChallenge is a glowing tribute to a woman that has for the best part of forty years distinguished herself in the realm of finance, policy, and administration. The challenge has seen many women, young and old, dress like Okonjo-Iweala herself with the matching blouse and headdress and spectacles to boot. Success does have many relatives and it appears that some personalities who vilified her person for her work during Jonathan’s administration could not help themselves either. Before this achievement, she was singled out for criticism and vilification, however, her current stride is now regarded as a Nigerian achievement and not just hers. Reacting to the #BeLikeNgoziChallenge, the former Nigerian Finance minister wrote on Twitter:
‘Thanks to Temi @temite & all my wonderful sisters who dressed up in Ankara yesterday.Thank you for all your messages of support. I’m delighted&honored to see so many getting the “gele” right. Please let me know who won the challenge.’
It is not clear how the winner will be picked but it is clear to see that she has endorsed the challenge. Once again, Congratulations to Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Secretary-General of the World Trade Organisation. She will resume as head of the trade organisation on the 1st March 2021.
