NBC Introduces Internet-Free Video On Demand Service

The National Broadcasting Commission is partnering with Free-to-air TV and Radio service provider, FREETV, and Nigerian pay TV service, PLAY TV ,to provide Nigerians with a unique video on demand solution which it calls PlayVod.

The DG of the National Broadcasting Commission, Mallam Is’haq Modibbo Kawu, made the announcement at the launch of the service last week. He said that the new platform, a value-added service on the new Digital Switch-Over, will henceforth avail subscribers, access to an unlimited number of Nollywood movies in the comfort of their homes, without incurring data costs. He added that, on the part of the filmmakers and regulators, the new platform will curb piracy, as users will have cinema quality films at an affordable cost, a better alternative to patronizing pirated film merchants.

The PlayVod service will provide quality digital movies on demand from a list of movies that will be pushed directly to the Set Top Box, and customers will have to select a movie, pay for it, and be allowed three days access to the selected movie(s) without having to connect to the internet at any point in the entire process.

This platform is not only expected to curb the menace of piracy in the film industry, with has assumed a terrifying proportion, but also ensure that filmmakers and other stakeholders in the production and distribution of Nigerian movies are profitable in their business.

Customers who purchase the PlayVod dongle and activate the service will get one movie for free, after which they will be required to pay and watch on demand.
