NBBF Secretary-General Invalidates Just Concluded Championships

Following the letter sent to the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) by the Federal International Basketball Associations (FIBA), there appears to be no headway in the leadership crisis that has rocked the NBBF for the past year. Rather it would seem the letter has brought about a new contention between the two factional heads of the basketball body. The Secretary-General of the Musa Kida led NBBF, Chimezie Asiegbu, stated on Monday that the just-concluded National Divisions 1 and 2 league competitions held in Ilorin, Kwara State are illegal and hence the results of the championships are invalid. In his defense, the Secretary-General referred to the most recent letter sent by the Federal basketball governing body, FIBA, calling for fresh elections into the board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation. “Of course, the latest decision by FIBA will affect the so-called league. It is illegal for them to organize any competition at this point on behalf of the NBBF.” He said. Asiegbu also mentioned FIBA’s initial verdict on positions in the NBBF. “In the letter FIBA wrote to us in July 2017, it was clearly spelt out that all basketball-related organizational issues should be handled by the Kida-led NBBF,” He stated. Having heard FIBA’s decision on fresh elections, the Umar-led NBBF however, chose to continue with its activities, this included the Division 1 and 2 competitions which came to a close on Sunday. The Abuja All Stars were the champions of the Division 1 league, while Showtime Hoopers came out on top in Division 2.
