Nigerian shot put king, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi alongside US-born Nigerian hammer throw African Record holder, Annette Echikunwoke, are also part of athletes presently in Lagos in the quest for tickets to the global showpiece. Annette Echikunwoke has never been to Nigeria before, and she was spotted with all smiles as she looks to improve on her Personal Best of 75.49m, but will have to wait for Day 2 of the event just as the likes of Chioma Onyekwere, Dotun Ogundeji, Sade Olatoye because no field event was held on the Day 1. However, the track events of Day 1 did not come short of expectations as Okagbare cruised to victory in the final of the women’s 100m in a time of 10.63 seconds. But for a tailwind of +2.7, Okagbare’s time would have seen her emerge as the World Lead, African Record, and National Record holder with her time.

Rosemary Chukwuma (11:09) edged past Grace Nwokocha (11:11) to finish second in the final of the 100m race. In the men’s 100m event, Enoch Adegoke made the headlines after becoming the 12th Nigerian athlete to qualify for the Olympics. Adegoke ran a new Personal Best of 10.00s (+1.2) to win the 100m race.
