Naira Notes: The 10 Naira Note

The ten naira note was introduced in 1973. In 2007, it was redesigned first in paper material and then in polymer.

On the front of the note is the image of Dr Alvan Ikoku and at the back is an illustration of Fulani milk maids.

Alvan Ikoku was born in August 1900 and is well known for his contributions to education is Nigeria. He attended the Arochukwu Government Primary School from 1911 to 1914 and Hope Waddell College, Calabar from 1915 to 1920. He was a teacher at St. Paul’s Teachers’ Training College, Awka, and during this period he obtained a degree in Philosophy in 1928 through the external programme of the University of London. In 1931, he established the Aggrey Memorial Secondary School in Arochukwu, named after his mentor James Aggrey, a Ghanaian missionary and educationist.

Dr Ikoku was nominated to the Eastern Nigeria House of Assembly and assigned to the ministry of education in 1946 and in 1947 he was one of three representatives of the Eastern Region to be part of the Legislative Council in Lagos. He was also a member of the West African Educational Council (WAEC), the Council of the University of Ibadan and Chairman, Board of Governors of the Aviation Training Centre.
