Celebrating his posthumous birthday, the children of Fela Kuti have opened a museum called “Kalakuta” which is dedicated to their late father and Afrobeat Legend. The Museum was launched yesterday, October 15, when he would have been 74years. Fela died in 1997 – at 58 – of HIV-related sickness, but his works and significance continued to put him in the news.
There was a New York Broadway show, promoted by Jay – Z and Will Smith, about Fela. And there have been annual weeklong shows, Felabration, celebrating his birthday. The 2012 Felabration has kicked off, with the museum launch being a part of the events. The museum will display many of his wares, photos, and write-ups.
Femi Kuti, Fela’s first son and 3-time Grammy Awards Nominee said “The museum is not finished, but we had to make the opening today. It symbolizes his birthday and his struggle.”
