Mrs Bolanle Ambode, the wife of Lagos State Governor was decorated as the matron and mother of The African Child. This occurred at the African Women Lawyers Association parley, held at Victoria Island, Lagos. This is part of the activities organised to celebrate the annual general meeting of the Nigerian Bar Association.
The Governor’s wife applauded the augmentations of women lawyers towards the reforms recorded in child and women rights in the State, country and continent.
She observed that women and children in Nigeria and Africa would be presented with a brighter future due to the steady progress recorded in respect to their individual rights.
She recollected that Lagos State was the first to pass the Child Rights Law, as they followed the footprints of the Federal Government, reckoning that the State had also passed a law against domestic violence. Also, she believes that no country would be able to achieve full development of the women and children are relegated to the background.
In her welcome address, President of the Association, Mrs Mandy Demechi-Asagba remarked that the group stood for the protection and promotion of the rights and interest of women and children in Nigeria and Africa.
For her, she added that the Association hopes to redirect the course of the 21st century as she addresses key challenges. These key challenges include inequality, poverty and violence against women and girls. She notes that violence against women and children is at its peak and requires emergency, desperate, deliberate and purposeful action before it consumes all.
