Sandra Bullock is funny, and Melissa McCarthy (from Identity Thief and Bridesmaids) is funny as well. Seeing as I have never regretted seeing a movie with either of these ladies in it, I decided to go ahead and see this one.
Was I disappointed? Not in the least bit. Yes, the movie was a little predicable in the sense that the storyline is a tried and tested comedy plot, what with matching two very unlikely characters together to produce a bond forged by insults and pranks and finding out that they aren’t really as different as they thought after all.
Ashburn (Bullock) is an ambitious FBI agent who desires a promotion, and is given an assignment to take down a drug lord in Boston. Mullins (McCarthy) is a female cop who is good at her job but unappreciated by her family because she put her brother in jail for engaging in drugs. The two meet and find themselves in a position where they have to work together, which seems like a disastrous thing because of their obvious differences, but later they find a common ground on the basis that they are two women who are underestimated at their various places of work.
This is what I like about the movie. That beneath the laughter and the jokes is a real life, relate-able situation that most women in their workplaces can understand, and it is done with such a smooth hand. It’s like feeding you bitter panadol but coating it with garri and ssoup. You chuckle and grin but you can’t ignore the fact of life that the director, Paul Feig, is trying to portray here.
Basically, if you are down and depressed, feeling a little under the weather, The Heat is the movie to see. Thank me later.
