Other people matter. This may sound like a well-worn motivational sound bite by pop psychologists and the likes, but it is an apt description of what life is all about. Life, the good life, is and should be all about people. Our journey across life will bisect and intersect with other people and a lot will depend on our people skills.
People matter. Here are three reasons why:
1. You need People. We all need people around us to make us feel loved, valuable and accepted. Humans have an innately aching need for acceptance and love. Without other people in our lives, our lives would be dull, dreary, gray and sad. Our need to connect with people is a reason why social networks are so popular. The quality of our relationships with other people goes a long way in determining the quality of our lives. As long as we live, we’ll always need other people.
2. People need You. No matter how disadvantaged or how challenging your life and background is, people need you. You, despite your circumstances have skills, experiences, insights and views that others don’t have. Your uniqueness is why people long to know you. No one’s life experiences are worthless. Try meeting more people around you. You’ll find that your insights and contributions are highly valued. People need you.
3. Perspective: Seeing the world from other people’s perspective makes you a more rounded person and gives you a clue into how people see the world around them. You come to realize that things are not always as they seem. You empathize more with people and share in their joys and sorrows. Your people skills get honed in the process and you grow to become a better person.
