More Messages Sent Through Chat Apps than SMS in 2012

A U.S. mobile technology industry analyst company, Informa, has said that nearly 19 billion messages were sent out over chat apps around the world in 2012, versus 17.6 billion SMS messages. The company also predicted that 50 billion messages would be sent through chat apps by 2014, and 21 billion SMS, by that time.
It gave a list of over the top apps, namely, WhatsApp, BlackBerry Messenger, Viber, Nimbuzz, Apple’s iMessage and KakaoTalk, saying that users sent an average of 32.6 messages per day – using the apps, compared to 5 SMS per day.
