Mary Odunuga
Winner of the Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars, Lupita Nyong’o delivered a resounding speech on beauty. The 12 Years a Slave actress’ speech on beauty celebrates our “night-shaded” skin. She redefines beauty in this speech taking notes from her experiences from her mother’s encouragement and a little girl’s concern. Lupita defines true beauty as this, “Beauty is something had to be… What is beautiful is compassion for yourself and for those around you. That kind of beauty enflames the heart and enchants the soul.”
She concludes, “Feel the validation of your external beauty; and also get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside. That… There is no shade in that beauty.”
