Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr, is optimistic about Nigeria’s future at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, but still thinks there’s a lot of work to be done if this dream is to be achieved.
Nigeria was the top-dog in a difficult pre-world cup friendly against Poland on Friday, which saw the Super Eagles pull up every neat trick, only to barely edge the Red and Whites 1-0.
In the absence of team captain, John Mikel Obi, the Eagles narrowly held their fort and played mainly on their luck and good fortunes to win the match against a very strong and active Polish team.
When asked during the post-match briefing, the chances of survival the Super Eagles have if they’re placed in a more difficult situation without Mikel, Coach Rohr admitted that this is the first time the Super Eagles have won a game without the captain, nonetheless, the team is not made of one man and the Eagles showed this when they made due compensation for Mikel’s absence in beating Poland.
“Yes, we won this game without our captain Obi Mikel, its the first time that we win without him,” Rohr said.
“
But I think that we had a good captain also today and the team collectively could make good compensation of his absence. Our team is not only one player even if we have some leaders of course in the team like we have in each team,” he continued, “but we showed today that collectively we are able to be all leaders…”
“The opponent is number 6 in the world,” Rohr said, while speaking on the performance of the Super Eagles against Poland, “…its not because we won that now we will be the favorites of our group in the world cup. There is a lot of work to do,” he added.
