The Kwara Cricket Federation is concluding plans to host the Easter Holiday Cricket tournament for secondary schools in the state.
The event, which will feature several teams from different schools across the state, is part of the cricket body’s objective to discover, equip and develop young players at the grassroots.
To ensure the success of the event, the body has embarked on a short-term project to revamp the cricket pitch before the tournament in April.
According to reports, Mr Emmanuel Obafemi, the first Vice Chairman of the Kwara Cricket Federation, had already taken up the responsibility to renovate the pitch in due time for the games.
From the meeting held on Tuesday by members of the association, schoolmasters representing the 16 secondary schools have been instructed to take coaching and officiating courses from Monday, January 21, 2019. Also, the association agreed that the tourney will be conducted in conjunction with the Nigeria Cricket Federation.
The Technical Director of the association, Wale Obalola, informed the body that two former state cricketers, Abdulqadri Taiwo and Samson Rachael, had both received an invitation to the national team and are expected to take part in a bilateral series against Rwanda. Another player, Abolarin Rasheed, has also been called to represent the country’s Under-19 Junior Male team.
Wale went on to emphasize the importance of training young talents in the state, using the aforementioned players as a good case in point of just how much impact the federation would make with appropriate support.
