If you follow Nigerian comedy, you might popular comedian,
Gordons, who intermittently shouts
“Hallelujah” in between jokes, and always talks of
“Moving the ministry to the permanent site”. What you may not know, however, is that that he was first a pastor before he went full time into comedy.
Gordons
Gordons is the first born in a polygamous family. At 13 he was already the family’s breadwinner; his family was faced with financial challenges.
He was a member of the
DC Envoy music and comedy group while in school. After graduation, he tried his hands on a lot of things including becoming a recording artiste. He also went into ministry, serving as resident pastor of
Rainbow Christian Assembly, Jakpa Branch, a Pentecostal church in Sapele, Delta State. This, however, did not last very long as he went ahead to pursue other ambitions.
Comedy
While in Lagos in 2005 to work on a studio album, he got a call which changed his fortune forever.
Gordons was called by the convener of
The Experience, Lagos, the single largest gospel music event, to anchor the event. That night’s comedy performance before a crowd of over five hundred thousand was the breakthrough he needed.
Gordons has since performed on several stages and is currently among the top 10 comedians in the country. He is the organiser of the
Gordons Comedy Klinic, taking comedy around the country.
When asked by Vanguard Newspapers if he would one day consider going back to ministry, he said:
“I cannot say for now. Anything can happen. If God gives me a call, I won’t reject it.”
