Kevin Akpoguma Eager For Eagles Switch

  Hoffenheim of German central back, Kevin Akpoguma, has expressed his eagerness to wear the Nigerian national team jersey after switching his allegiance from Germany to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations bronze-medalists. Akpoguma, 25, was born and raised in Germany to a German mother and a Nigerian father which means he is eligible to feature for both countries.

The tall Hoffenheim defender already featured for Germany at youth levels, captaining their U-20 national team to the quarter-finals of the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup held in New Zealand. Akpoguma who has made his request for switching allegiance officially through a written request to FIFA is now awaiting the clearance of the world-ruling football body.

I am now at an age where I have already gained experience at European level with TSG and feel ready to play for my homeland.It makes me incredibly proud and I am positively excited. The Nigerian who is a regular for Hoffenheim has featured for the Bundesliga side twice this season and is expected to be a big part of Gernot Rohr’s Super Eagles as they look towards qualifying for the 2021 AFCON and the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Once Akpoguma gets his clearance from FIFA, he will join the likes of Leon Balogun, William Troost-Ekong, Tyrone Ebuehi, Maduka Okoye, Ola Aina, Alex Iwobi, amongst others who were eligible to feature for foreign countries but chose to don the colours of their fatherland.
