Kanu Nwankwo, the former Super Eagles captain has requested his club, Portsmouth FC to pay him 3million pounds he’s owed in unpaid wages. The cash strapped club has rocked administration and possible liquidation in recent years.
The administrator, Trevor Birch has served a notice to all the players and staff that the club will shut down on August 10, unless high earners like the ex-Nigerian international accept compromised offer.
He said “The club is heading for liquidation in just a few weeks, perhaps two weeks, if these players don’t leave or compromise on their wages. Yes, we are now reaching a critical time and time is running out. I can only hope by serving notice that the club will shut down on August 10 will concentrate minds”
However, Kanu rebuffed the offer and insisted the club pay his wages in full. Kanu, who is nicknamed “The King” by the Pompey faithful, for his heroics in their FA Cup triumph back in 2008, said the club owes him 3million in unpaid wages and he would only settle for the full payment before the club liquidates.
The club is supposed to play in League One next season and will start the season with a 10-point deduction for returning to administration.
With Birch saying the club faces liquidation even before the league started, they are supposed to kick off their season in a carling cup tie against Plymouth Argyle on August 14 and Bournemouth in the League four days later, he imposed 5,000 per week salary cap to cut cost with excess paid once, the club avoids liquidation.
Kanu has been at the club since 2006 after signing from West Bromwich Albion.
