Kamaru Retains World Title After Defeating Covington

Forbes

Nigeria-American, Kamaru Usman, defeated America’s Colby Covington to successfully defend his Ultimate Fighting Champion (UFC) Welterweight title on Sunday, December 15, 2019 at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas.

Termed a grudge match by many, a spectacular finish by “The Nigerian Nightmare” in the last 50 seconds saw him brutally finish the American with a jaw-breaking hit. Despite not starting the fight too convincingly, Usman ended the fight in a thrilling fashion, knocking Covington down twice with precise punches before finishing him on the ground.

Both fighters commenced the match with two busy rounds of striking and the American challenger seemed to be landing more blows and went further to poke Usman in the eye during the third round. The Nigerian responded by bloodying the challenger, and Covington was heard telling his corner that he thought his jaw was broken. Usman took control of the fight and gradually finished Covington in what was his first title defence after he won the title from Tyron Woodley in March 2018.
