The Portuguese tactician lost his first game in charge of the three-time African champions but was impressed with the attitude shown by his players.
The new head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Jose Peseiro, hailed the character shown by his players in their 2-1 loss against Mexico in an international friendly on Sunday, May 29, 2022, at the AT&T Stadium, Dallas, USA. The match was Peseiro’s first outing as Super Eagles’ chief coach and he expressed optimism about the chances of the team improving in subsequent games.
Santiago Gimenez handed Gerardo Martino’s boys the lead in the 12th minute of the game, but 2021/2022 Europa Conference League top scorer CyrielDessers restored parity with a powerful header in the 54th minute of the game. An own goal from Troost-Ekong in the 56th minute meant the South Americans emerged victorious in the match.
“In the first half Mexico was much better than us but in the second half I think we had more balance,’’Peseiro told the media after the game.
“I am not happy that we lost but I’m happy with the performance of my players because they showed character, especially after what Mexico did in the first half. I think in the second half there was improvement,”
the Portuguese tactician insisted.
Jose Peseiro and his lads will file out again on Friday, June 3rd in another friendly game in New Jersey against Ecuador before leaving for Nigeria to commence preparations for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
