Former Nigerian national U-17 and U-20 football teams coach, John Obuh, has stated that players who ply their trade in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), need to be oriented on the risks attached to travelling by road during league breaks. Reacting to the death of Enugu Rangers’ forward, Ifeanyi George who died in a fatal auto-crash on Sunday, March 22, 2020, while travelling to Lagos owing to the corona virus induced break, and the kidnap of Enyimba FC of Aba’s star, Dayo Ojo, who was in company of Abia Warriors’ Benjamin Iluyomade (also kidnapped) on same day.

Obuh noted that travelling by road exposed the players to numerous risks, and suggested that players should be restricted from traveling during short breaks in other to avoid similar incidences in the future or special measures be taken to ensure their safety if they must travel.
The players and the officials, including the coaches during the league season have enough risks of travelling… It is not the best for the players. These players don’t even want a day off, because once there’s a break they already have plans of travelling. That is why I still want to believe they really need to be orientated. They really need to understand that travelling is not the best option at every point in time but if they want to travel, they must make the necessary arrangements.
