Mikel’s move to Kuwait is his second spell in Asia after his two-year stint with the Chinese side, Tianjin Teda. Kuwait SC is a 15-time champion of Kuwait’s topflight league, the VIVA Premier League. However, Mikel will be looking to bring them back to glory as their last league title win was in the 2018/2019 season. Also, the club boasts as the first Kuwaiti club to win an Asian title, having won the AFC on three occasions, 2009, 2012, and 2013. The duo of Kuwait SC and Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya of Iraq, are the only clubs in Asia to have won the AFC three times, putting them ahead of other clubs on the continent.
