Today’s match is the first leg of two friendlies Nigeria will play against the Central Africans with the second leg scheduled to hold on June 8th, 2021. Both matches are in a bid by the federations of Nigeria and Cameroon to ensure their teams remain in shape ahead of the commencement of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers by September. The qualifiers were supposed to commence this June but owing to fears about COVID-19, it was postponed to September in other to permit participating nations enough time to ensure strict compliance to COVID-19 safety protocols.

Nigeria emerged victorious (3-2) in their last meeting with Cameroon at the second round of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt and was equally responsible for denying the Cameroonians a ticket to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia after beating them 4-0 in the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, and earning a vital 1-1 away draw against the Lions as the Super Eagles finished top in a group that also contained Zambia and Algeria. Chief coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, will be hoping to maintain his unbeaten run against the Cameroonians since taking over the reins as the Nigerian national team handler.
