People around the globe can now learn the Igbo Language at the University of Oxford
Renowned global institute of learning, the University of Oxford, England, has for the first time in its 926-year history, introduced the Nigerian Igbo language as a course of study. Igbo Language which is mainly spoken by the Igbo people of South-Eastern Nigeria comprising Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, Imo, and Abia State, and millions of people of Igbo extraction around the globe, will now be taught at the English institution which has students from different parts of the world.
This information was made public via a tweet by Emmanuel Umeonyirioha who has been inducted as the first official lecturer of the Igbo Language in the University.
“It is official that I am the first official Igbo Language lecturer at the number one university in the world, the University of Oxford,’’ Mr Umeonyirioha disclosed in a tweet on Thursday, February 17, 2022, to the amazement of Nigerians, especially the Igbo people.
“Our induction happened today (Thursday) by Marion Sadoux, Head of Modern Language Programmes, University of Oxford Language Centre.’’
In his tweet, Mr Umeonyirioha posted his photo while holding a textbook which is a learner’s manual on the Igbo Language. The scholar also posted a video that captured him lecturing a white woman on how to read some Igbo words. He also disclosed that classes are set to commence on Thursday, February 24, 2022, from 3 pm to 4 pm.
Mr Umeonyirioha did not fail to mention that the James Currey Society, a non-profit organization committed to studying the works of British publisher, James Currey, was behind ensuring that the Igbo Language is being taught at the University of Oxford, England.
