How To Start a Computer Training or ICT Centre

DGHI Website Network

Despite all that’s been said about how widespread digital literacy is, not everyone owns the computing devices needed to get a lot of important things done. Besides, outside of the major cities, whole swathes of the country still rely on ICT centres to get things like online registrations and result checking done.

And if you’re going to get up to scratch with ICT, you may want to begin with the basic training that is usually on offer at these centres. These include the use of the internet, working with important software (e.g. Microsoft and Google tools), information processing, and digital communication. Also, many people- especially school-aged children –want to learn to code. If you’re proficient enough with programming, you could offer one or more introductory courses to them for a fee at your ICT centre. In a nutshell, computer training centres aren’t obsolete. Not even close. They get inundated with customers who want to learn computing skills that are in high demand. As such, they are an income generator for people who own and run them. Here are the steps you can take to launch a computer training or ICT centre.

Know the Basics About Computers, Computing, and More

Be sure that you know how computers work. In fact, you should know a lot more than a regular person. How else are you going to be of help if a customer runs into a problem as they work with your computers? You ought to know how to troubleshoot their problems.

Perhaps you won’t be manning the computers yourself; in his case, you probably don’t have to be a computer nerd. But you’ll have to know enough to understand when there is an issue with equipment and interact with your staff without misunderstanding them. Some of the things you should be proficient in include the use of search engines and social media, word documents, data entry and spreadsheets, and file creation and storage. And if you’re adding programming to your menu of offers, you should be fairly good at it too.

Plan Your Courses

This applies if your ICT centre doubles as a training facility. What will your training programs look like? How will you transition from the basics to the more detailed and complex topics without making things difficult for your trainees? These are some of the things you want to think about as you draft your curriculum for your programs. You could use already existing program outlines as an alternative; there are a lot of them on the web that you can print out and use.

Find a Suitable Location

The basic requirements for a location for your business are that it should have a regular power supply, be close to or in an area with reasonably good human presence or traffic, and at least a potential interest in your service.

Purchase Equipment And Hire People

Your facility will include chairs, desks, desktop computers, fans or air conditioners, and an alternative power supplies.  You will also need to subscribe to an Internet Service Provider (ISP), which will serve your data connection needs. You will want to hire people who really know how to use the devices at the centre. They should show evidence of being skilled enough to use the programs your customers will be turning to more often so that they will be able to help those customers when the need arises.

Market Your Business

There are three major ways to market a business like this one: word-of-mouth, online and social media, and hard material like posters and handbills. Word-of-mouth marketing involves telling people about your business- informing family, friends, acquaintances and even random people you meet at public places about your computer centre. Start a social media page as well, especially if your ICT centre will be serving a large area. Share updates on a regular basis, so that your followers on social media know that your facility is active. It will also encourage more people to get interested in what you do.  And if you’re doubling as a training centre, you could use a business website as well.
