Hair business, they say, is good business, but should that be at the expense of customers like us who aim to spend wisely and manage money effectively? It’s bad enough that life’s daily activities can be on the pricey side. Why should looking good break the bank as well?
You’ve heard them all; the stories of ladies who spend over N20k in a single salon visit – minus hair extensions – only to undo the style in a month or so, or perhaps, the next day because it “just didn’t look good”.
That won’t be you (Amen?), thanks to this list of handy tips we’ve compiled to help you save money at the salon. They include:
1.
Wash your hair at home: Some salons charge up to N1,000, just for washing and drying. God help you if you decide to include a steaming/deep condition session. If you get these stages out of the way, after a shower at home perhaps, that’s some good money saved that could be put to better use.
2.
Use your own products: Guess what raises the price of washing at some salons? Using their shampoo! Let’s not get started on the fact that these shampoos are seriously diluted, but if you would like to avoid falling victim to this, simply take your own shampoo, conditioner,
home-made spritz and other essential hair products to the salon.
3.
Go to small, neighbourhood salons: Who says you have to go to the big-shot salons, particularly in these trying economic times? Patronise up-and-comers in your neighbourhood, especially when the styles are simple and easy to do. You’ll be surprised at how much cheaper their rates are and the one-on-one service you get because of the size.
4.
Negotiate! Negotiate!! Negotiate!!!:Most Nigerian women are pros at this – Never accept the first asking price as the last, instead negotiate it down to something you can comfortably pay for and that is fair to the salon.
5.
Use a top coat 2-3 times a week: Doing this consistently prevents your nails from chipping sooner, and hence, preserves your manicure and pedicure for longer.
6.
Fix or braid hair during off-peak times: Christmas season is getting closer by the minute, and every lady usually plans to rock special “Christmas hair” during the holiday. Beware, salons tend to raise their prices a week or two before holidays because of the expected rush, so be sure to style your hair much sooner to save money.
7.
Dye hair wisely: If you’re a fan of dying your hair, here’s a two-in-one tip for you. First, choose highlights instead of overall colour dyes, as they tend to be much cheaper. And secondly, use colour protecting shampoo in between treatments to help the colour last longer.
