To run the world, you need beauty and brains! Simple.
It’s fun being a woman. Well, most times. I love shopping, dressing up and looking good. I also love to play around with make-up and different hairstyles. Despite all of these, there’s more to me than my beauty.
It makes me really (add another ‘really’ for effect) sad when I see a beautiful woman who can’t hold an intelligent conversation. You see her, face well primed, dressed to kill and all but when she opens her mouth, it all becomes a disaster. We are quick to let all the men know that we run the world but how do we run the world without any IQ? Queen Bey who sang the song we all love to quote is not only an epitome of beauty but also an intelligent woman. Trust me, you can’t get to where she is right now just riding on beauty alone. Do you see how hard that woman works?
I agree, being beautiful opens certain doors for you. Everyone loves a good looking woman; at least most people do. However, what determines your length of stay once you get in that door is what you have in your brain. Personally, I think beautiful ladies who are either unintelligent or shallow begin to appear less beautiful and increasingly boring over time. Also, it doesn’t take much to be a fine girl these days. I look at Instagram and Facebook and I see so many fine women! Yes I know some of them may be artificial but that’s not the point here. The point is that we have at our disposal, all the tools we need to make ourselves look beautiful. Take a plain looking girl, give her some well-fitted clothes and gorgeous heels and slap some make-up on her while not forgetting to use some human hair on her head and she will transform beyond your imagination.
So definitely, being beautiful alone doesn’t just cut it anymore. Let’s begin to invest in ourselves; in our mental development. Instead of watching back-to-back episodes of Real Housewives of Atlanta or Keeping Up With The Kardashians, why don’t you listen to the news or watch Discovery channel? If those are too boring for you, read a book or enroll in a class to acquire a new skill. Beyond reading fashion magazines, pick up Forbes or The Economist once in a while. Broaden your knowledge. Expand your scope of thinking.
One of the women I admire very much is Michelle Obama. She always has her best foot forward. She speaks intelligently and carries herself with grace. And did I forget to mention that she’s beautiful too? Women like Oprah, the late Maya Angelou, Oby Ezekwesili, Tara Fela-Durotoye and many others may not be the most beautiful women in the world but many women aspire to be like them. Why? It is because they have substance. They didn’t settle for average.
I want today’s generation of women to aspire for more than just being beautiful women. Let’s aspire to build our own companies, become CEOs of global organisations, policy changers and record-breakers. Let’s truly run this world using our intelligence and our God given talents. It’s time to change the status quo.
