HLFDW 2017 kicked off yesterday 25th October 2017, and from all indications, the fun just got started. The part we earnestly waited for, the runway show, started out with the arrival of designers – old and new – from all over showcasing their impressive designs. While some took the risk and pushed the boundaries, some, however, kept it simple.
Here are some of the highlights from Day 1 HLFDW event.O’milua takes us back to the 50’s with her collections
Olajumoke Ademilua surely brings her A-game every time on taking fashion to another level. Her designs represent rich African heritage from start to finish. O’milua’s risqué creations sometimes can be startling, still, her oldies collection on the LFDW runway depicts cultural roots with an ethical presentation that has to be acknowledged.

It’s all about silks underneath a dark appeal with 8th Wanda
Durban-based fashion designer Nokwanda Ngcobo started her journey in the world of fashion after she graduated from DUT with a national diploma in Fashion Technology. After further studying, she gained more skills, then started out her own clothing label (Wanda Woman). A brand’s accomplishment can be seen with their quality work – case in point 8th Wanda’s collection. Her array of designs was nothing short of breathtaking with the models strutting down the runway in silky gowns, one more beautiful than the next. Thumbs up to her.

JZO gives Traditional attire a new look
JZO is well-known for his unique brand that’s inspired by African themes. During the LFDW runway show, he brings out an array of trendy traditional attires, reflecting the versatility of African prints as it comes in a mix of cool colors such as blue, yellow, orange, with simple designs.

‘Glitz and Glam’ is the word with Morafa’s collection
Seun Morafa Opened the 2017 LFDW runway show and it was LIT. The creative director’s collections showcased an electrifying mix of designs.

Let’s go Chinese with native attire says Ugo Monye
Ugo Monye is one of Nigerian’s top fashion designers and famous for his trendy choices. He surely pushed the boundaries with his collection featuring the traditional kimono design, the concept and attention to detail are one to be applauded. Kudos to him.

Eki Orleans London – African on Silk
Eki Orleans showcased her passion for African prints in unique fashion-forward collections. Her ability to mix and match the silk on African fabric is outstanding.

Johnson-Johnson – premium bespoke
Johnson Rotimi is one designer that does not shy away from fashion risks. His display of Western collection fused with African patterns without it being all over the place was splendid.

Style Temple – A breath of fresh air
Ogugua Okonkwo brought a certain freshness mixed with creativity with her collections. The details on every piece seemed complex, yet, pulled off effortlessly. From the bold ruffles statement designs to the hint of African culture, Style Temple’s collection took a trip down the runway to discover what femininity really means to her and other women through fashion.

Kinabuti classics
Kinabuti’s collection featured an African edginess that cannot be missed. Her designs focused on unique African themes subtly hinting a Contemporary concept.

Amede’s artistic designs
Nigerian Fashion Designer Amede Nzeribe, a lawyer turned designer gets creative with colors. Her collection featured an array of beautiful designs set on chiffon prints that showcases timeless pieces that appeal to women of all ages.

Ejiro Amos Tafiri
Fashion Designer Ejiro Amos’ has a lot to be proud of especially with her win of the best fashion designer for fashion and retail last year at the LFDW. This year, staying true to her cultural roots, her collection displays the femininity and personal style of a woman.
