The history of Nigerian basketball would be incomplete without mentioning the victory of the country’s senior male basketball team at the 2015 Afro Basketball tournament held in Tunisia.
The match held on August 30, 2015 saw D’Tigers record a 74-65 win over African basketball superpower, Angola, in Tunis. Also, the Nigerian side finished the tournament with only one loss which was against the host nation, Tunisia, in their last group game.
However, what was particularly interesting about D’Tigers’ victory over Angola in the final was the fact that Nigeria emerged champions of African basketball for the first time in history, and also booked the ticket for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, as victory meant direct qualification for the global showpiece. Such a feat had never happened in the country’s basketball history prior to 2015. Nigerian basketball star, Chamberlain Oguchi, was on the lips of everyone as his standout performance saw the Angolan team, which had defeated D’Tigers in the 2003 final in Alexandria, Egypt, fall. It was sweet revenge for the Nigerian male basketball team that has gone on to become a dominant force at AfroBasket.
