Aruna Quadri swimmingly braved through the first and second rounds of the Men’s Table Tennis Singles event, at the Rio 2016 Olympics. However, Round 3 was not going to be a walk in the park for the African champion, who at the time was the continent’s only surviving representative in the men and women’s singles event.

It was quite clear that Quadri had reached his wit’s end, following his win over Slovakia’s Wang Yang 4-2, to progress to the round.

Quadri’s next opponent, Chih-Yuan Chuang, entered the tournament at Round 3 on the basis of being ranked the number 7 best in the world, at the time.

A win for Quadri was very unlikely, but Quadri was determined to fight for a spot in the next round regardless.

Quadri went on to shock the table tennis world with a dominant 4-0 (11-6, 12-10, 11-6 and 11-7) win over Chuang, in a display that is arguably one of the Nigerian’s best ever game in his career.

Quadri defeated Chuang 11-6 in the first quarter. However, in the second quarter things got even more interesting with the Taiwanese player taking the lead 10-8. Quadri soon doubled his efforts to take Chuang’s serve before wining his own to close the quarter at 12-10.

The third and fourth quarters were quite easy for Quadri who already asserted his strength over Chaung, as he progressed into Round 4 of the mens’s singles event.
