Prior to the Los Angeles (United States of America) Olympics in 1984, Team Nigeria had not won any medal in a global relay competition but the duo of Sunday Uti and Innocent Egbunike alongside Moses Ugbesien and Rotimi Peters set out to bring glory to the African nation in the United States.

On the quest to winning Nigeria’s first-ever medal in athletics, the country’s best quarter-milers at the time, Sunday Uti and Innocent Egbunike had both competed in the individual 400m final at the 1984 Olympics and were out for success in the 4x400m Bronze-medal race, running the first and final legs respectively. The interesting thing about Nigeria winning bronze in the race lies in the fact that their time of 2:59.32 was an African record that would go on to last for sixteen years. Nigeria has the athletes of 1984 to thank for setting the pace for generations to come. With their feat, Nigeria’s place in the global athletic scene was established.
