GLO Sponsorship of Nigerian Premier League Ends

Telecommunication outfit, Globacom, has officially ended their sponsorship of the Nigerian Premier League. Globacom had been in partnership with the League Management Company (LMC) for over a decade, signing their last sponsorship agreement at the beginning of the 2012/2013 league season. However, the deal elapsed at the completion of the 2016 Super Four football tournament which was held in both Kaduna and Uyo. Globacom has hugely contributed to the development of football in Nigeria and Africa, as a whole, ever since it commenced operations in 2003 by committing funds to support the Nigerian national teams: the Nigerian Premier League, Nigerian Football Supporters Club, CAF Player of the Year Awards and other football initiatives. It is believed that the new generation firm spent over ₦8 billion to empower and promote the Nigerian Premier League. They reiterated their desire to take Nigerian Football to greater heights in 2012, throwing their weight behind the then newly formed League Management to restructure the league. As a result, the organisation of the league matches have  immensely improved; the league has been rated among the top three in Africa recently. The LMC is expected to announce multi-sponsorship deals with different companies for the upcoming season, which will see to it that these companies sponsor the league through different platforms.
